Tromsø
The Arctic town that outfitted the great polar expeditions.

Tromsø is a city in the very northernmost part of Norway. It is almost 350 km north of the Arctic Circle and is one of the best places to view the spectacular Northern Lights in winter. Tromsø is a surprise to most visitors: Here you find art, history, sophistication, good food and an infamous nightlife in a bustling, tiny city. All of it, though, is surrounded by spectacular scenery that is visible from everywhere in town.
The Arctic city
Tromsø has been the departure point for Arctic expeditions since the nineteenth century — Nansen, Amundsen and the sealing fleet all sailed from here. The town keeps that outward-looking character, with the world's northernmost university, botanical garden and cathedral.
Light and dark
The sun does not set between late May and late July, and does not rise between late November and mid-January. The dark months are the season for the northern lights, which are frequently visible from the town itself when the sky is clear.
